Powering Fitness, Reducing Emissions: How Carbon Gym is Leading in Sustainability
TL;DR: Sustainable gym Geelong searches often lead here for a reason. Carbon Gym runs two rooftop solar systems across Studio 3 and Studio 5 in Norlane, with a combined panel capacity of 69.825kW. Since going live, they’ve generated more than 109,000 kWh of clean electricity, offsetting roughly 85 tonnes of CO2-e based on Victoria’s official grid emissions factor. In 2025, the first full year both systems ran, they produced 64.8 MWh, enough to avoid about 50 tonnes of CO2-e.

Our name at Carbon Gym now carries more meaning than ever. While we’re dedicated to helping our members reduce their own carbon footprint through fitness, we’re equally committed to reducing ours as a business, and that’s a big part of what makes us a genuinely sustainable gym in Geelong.
Gyms are energy-hungry buildings. Cardio equipment, lighting, air conditioning, and near round-the-clock access all add up fast. We wanted to do something real about that, so we installed solar across both our Studio 3 and Studio 5 sites in Norlane.
Sustainable Gym Geelong: How Much Solar Power Does Carbon Gym Use?
Carbon Gym runs two rooftop solar systems, one on Studio 3 and one on Studio 5, with a combined panel capacity of 69.825kW. Together they cover a meaningful share of the electricity it takes to run lighting, HVAC, and cardio equipment across both studios.
The Studio 5 system runs on a 25kW inverter, and the Studio 3 system runs on a 30kW inverter. Both went live in late 2023 and have been feeding clean power back into each studio ever since.
The Real Numbers: What Our Solar Panels Have Actually Generated
We track both systems through a live solar monitoring dashboard, so instead of rounding up, here’s exactly what they’ve produced.
Since installation, the two systems combined have generated more than 109,000 kWh (109.6 MWh) of electricity. In 2025, the first full calendar year both systems were running, they produced 64.8 MWh between them. So far in 2026 (January through early July), they’ve already generated 37.4 MWh, tracking at a similar pace to last year.
That’s not a projection or an estimate. It’s what the panels have actually put out, pulled straight from the monitoring platform.
How Much CO2 Does Carbon Gym’s Solar Power Offset?
Using Victoria’s official grid emissions factor of 0.78kg CO2-e per kWh, Carbon Gym’s solar systems have avoided roughly 85 tonnes of CO2-e since they were installed. In 2025 alone, they offset about 50 tonnes.
That figure matters because Victoria runs one of the most carbon-intensive electricity grids in Australia, largely due to brown coal generation. Every kilowatt-hour we generate ourselves is a kilowatt-hour that doesn’t have to come from that grid.
We want to be upfront here too: an earlier estimate on this page put our offset at over 100 tonnes a year. Once we pulled the real generation numbers, the actual 2025 figure came in at around 50 tonnes. We’d rather publish the accurate number than the bigger one, and we’ll keep updating this page as the data comes in.
More Than Just Solar
Solar isn’t the only place we’ve built sustainability into the gym. Our cardio floor features SportsArt ECO-Powr machines that turn member effort into usable electricity, so every workout on those machines feeds a little bit back into the grid.
Beyond that, we’ve made smaller changes that add up: LED lighting throughout both studios, efficient HVAC systems, and studio designs that cut down on wasted energy. It all feeds into the same goal: being a genuinely sustainable gym Geelong members can be proud to train at.
Why Does a Gym’s Carbon Footprint Matter?
Gyms are some of the most energy-intensive small businesses around, running equipment, lighting, and climate control nearly around the clock. Being a sustainable gym Geelong locals can point to means generating our own power and offsetting a real, measured share of our usage, so Carbon Gym can keep delivering the training and facilities our members expect without leaning as heavily on Victoria’s coal-fired grid.
It’s also just good practice. A gym that talks about health and performance should be able to back that up in how it runs as a business, not just in the classes it offers.
What’s Next for Carbon Gym’s Sustainability Push
We’re continuing to monitor both solar systems closely and will keep sharing real numbers as they come in, not rounded-up estimates. Longer term, we’re looking at further efficiency upgrades across both studios, from equipment to lighting.
None of this changes what happens on the training floor. It just means the energy behind every class, every session, and every PT block is a little cleaner than it used to be, and it’s what being a sustainable gym Geelong can count on looks like in practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much solar power does Carbon Gym have installed?
Carbon Gym runs two rooftop solar systems across Studio 3 and Studio 5 in Norlane, with a combined panel capacity of 69.825kW. The Studio 5 system uses a 25kW inverter and the Studio 3 system uses a 30kW inverter.
How much electricity has Carbon Gym’s solar system generated?
Since installation in late 2023, the two systems have generated more than 109,000 kWh combined. In 2025, the first full year both were running, they produced 64.8 MWh, and they’re on a similar pace through 2026.
How much CO2 does Carbon Gym’s solar power avoid each year?
Based on 2025’s actual generation of 64.8 MWh and Victoria’s official grid emissions factor of 0.78kg CO2-e per kWh, Carbon Gym’s solar systems avoid roughly 50 tonnes of CO2-e a year.
What other sustainability initiatives does Carbon Gym have?
Alongside solar, Carbon Gym uses SportsArt ECO-Powr cardio machines that convert workout effort into electricity, plus LED lighting and efficient HVAC systems across both studios.
Is Carbon Gym a sustainable gym Geelong members can rely on?
Carbon Gym offsets a real, measured share of its energy use through rooftop solar and energy-generating cardio equipment, which most traditional gyms don’t have. It’s one part of a broader effort to reduce the business’s footprint alongside member fitness goals.
