BJJ Classes Geelong: Gi, No-Gi, Kids & Adults
Carbon Gym runs Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes in Geelong for complete beginners through to competitors, covering both gi and no-gi styles. You’ll train on 430sqm of mats (a 320sqm matted combat floor plus a dedicated 110sqm BJJ and MMA mat area) with coaches who are active competitors and certified BJJ instructors.
BJJ is the “gentle art” of leverage, a grappling-based martial art where technique beats size, meaning anyone can train safely regardless of age, strength or fitness level. It’s one of the best martial arts for fitness, confidence and genuine self-defence, and because there is no striking involved, the injury rate is much lower than stand-up arts.
Whether you want to lose weight, learn real self-defence, compete, or just try something that makes you forget about the office, try your first class free, or 7 days unlimited at Carbon Gym Geelong, which covers all classes and the recovery zone.
Many of our BJJ students also add striking to their game by joining our Geelong boxing classes and Muay Thai, the perfect complement to grappling under one membership. Recovery is included too, so you can book the Dopamine Lab sauna and ice baths after training.
BJJ Gi
What is Gi BJJ? Our Gi BJJ classes teach the traditional techniques of Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu – grips, guard work, escapes and submissions – with a focus on respect and discipline. Suits beginners to advanced; start with 7 days unlimited.
Traditional yet evolving. In our classes, you’ll wear the Gi and learn how to control an opponent using lapel grips, sleeves and pant legs. From learning hip escapes and bridging to executing triangles, arm‑bars and sweeps, each session builds a foundation for effective self‑defence and sport grappling.
Supportive progression. Students are grouped by experience, so you’ll never feel out of your depth. Our black‑belt coaches guide you through technical drills, situational sparring and live rolling to ensure steady, injury‑free progress. Grading opportunities are available, but the emphasis is on personal growth, camaraderie and having fun.
BJJ No Gi
What is no‑gi BJJ? It’s Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu practised without the traditional Gi. You’ll learn how to use leverage, body positioning and efficient grips to control your opponent and finish fights. Our program is structured for beginners through to advanced grapplers, taking you from fundamental escapes and sweeps to dynamic submissions and competition‑level techniques.
Submission Grappling
What is Submission Grappling? Our submission‑grappling class combines wrestling, catch‑wrestling and no‑gi Jiu‑Jitsu to teach takedowns, positional control and submissions, ideal for MMA or pure grappling athletes.
Submission Grappling focuses on dominating positions and finishing holds without relying on clothing grips. Sessions start with wrestling‑based takedowns and clinch work, then progress to ground control, transitions and submissions such as chokes, armbars, kimuras and leg‑locks.
You’ll train situational drills to improve balance, pressure and escapes, followed by controlled live rolling. Coaches emphasise technique over strength and will adjust drills for beginners and advanced grapplers alike.
Why train with us? At Carbon Gym we pride ourselves on creating a safe, welcoming space where everyone can thrive. Classes are kept small to ensure personalised instruction, and you’ll train under experienced coaches who compete and constantly refine their craft. Whether your goal is to boost fitness, gain confidence, improve your MMA game or compete in grappling tournaments, our no‑gi sessions will challenge and inspire you.
The Carbon Gym runs regular BJJ classes in Geelong, including both kids BJJ classes and adults BJJ sessions. See our timetable for classes or contact us for enquiries.
Want to sharpen your BJJ between classes? Our coaches also run one-on-one sessions to fast-track your technique and conditioning. Explore personal training in Geelong at Carbon Gym.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu continues to grow as one of the world’s most popular martial arts. The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) governs competition at all levels and promotes BJJ as a martial art built on technique, leverage, and problem-solving rather than raw strength: values that define our BJJ program at Carbon Gym Geelong.
Who you’ll learn from in Geelong
Technique is only as good as the coach teaching it. Our BJJ program is led by Russell Marston, a first-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a black belt in Judo. That means you learn takedowns and ground fighting from someone who has reached the top of both arts. Russell coaches in a relaxed, fundamentals-first style with a strong focus on real self-defence.
You will also train with Tiffany Joyce, who holds Victorian state titles in both gi and no-gi in the absolute division, the open-weight category where you face opponents of any size. Behind them is a coaching team that trains and competes all year, and our members regularly bring home medals from tournaments around the state. Have a look at our latest BJJ competition results.
Classes are kept small, so whether it is your first day or you are prepping for a comp, you actually get the coach’s attention.
BJJ Classes Geelong: FAQs
Do I need to be fit to start BJJ?
No. Our BJJ classes Geelong beginners join are built for complete newcomers, and BJJ is one of the easiest martial arts to start unfit because technique and leverage beat strength. You set the pace in drilling, and your fitness builds fast over the first few weeks. Beginners are welcome at every class.
What should I wear to my first BJJ class?
For gi classes you will need a BJJ gi, but for your first class just bring shorts and a t-shirt or rash guard. No-gi and submission grappling are trained in shorts and a rash guard. We have gear in store if you need it.
Is BJJ good for self-defence?
Yes. BJJ teaches you to stay calm and in control if a fight ends up on the ground, where many real altercations go. Because there is no striking in training, you can practise realistic, full-resistance scenarios safely.
Can kids do BJJ at Carbon Gym?
Yes. We run kids BJJ as part of our kids martial arts program in Geelong. It builds confidence, discipline and coordination in a safe, fun environment, with no striking involved.
What is the difference between gi and no-gi BJJ?
Gi BJJ is trained in the traditional uniform, using grips on the jacket and pants to control your opponent. No-gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts, so it is faster and relies on body control rather than grips. Most members train both.
