Carbon Gym FAQ

Answers to the questions we get asked most about membership, classes, pricing, facilities, kids programs and free trials at Carbon Gym in Norlane.

What classes and training do you offer at Carbon Gym?

Carbon Gym in Norlane offers a huge range of classes and training for all fitness levels. Our combat sports include boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and MMA. We also run Carbon Fit HIIT and group fitness classes, personal training, kids martial arts, Pilates and strength and conditioning. Check our full timetable to find the right class for you.

Do I need experience to start training at Carbon Gym?

Not at all. Most of our members started as complete beginners. Every class at Carbon Gym is designed to welcome newcomers, and our coaches will guide you through the basics at your own pace. Whether you want to try boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ or a fitness class, there is zero pressure to compete or spar. We are a community-first gym where everyone supports each other, no matter your starting point.

Do I need to be fit to start?

We cater to all fitness levels. Our trainers can adjust any session to suit your fitness level, injury or confidence.

Paying 12 months up front works out cheaper: Gym Only $1,355, Gym & Recovery $1,695, Classes Only $2,080, Recovery+ $2,080, Full Access $2,895.

Prefer no minimum term? A 10 Casual Visits Pass is $200, with no membership required.

Which memberships include 24/7 gym access?

Gym Only, Gym & Recovery, Recovery+ and Full Access all include 24/7 gym floor access, by FOB or through the app. Classes Only and Kids memberships cover classes and don’t include gym floor access.

Can I just try one class?

Your first class is free. After that, a single class is $25, or you can grab a 10 class pack or one of our intro offers. Check out our membership page to see what’s available.

What’s the difference between Gym & Recovery and Recovery+?

Gym & Recovery ($39.99/week) includes the standard recovery suite. Recovery+ ($49.99/week) also includes access to the Dopamine Lab in Studio 5, which can be booked for completely private use for an additional cost.

What happens if I lose my access tag?

A new tag can be purchased for $50, or you can use the Carbon Gym app to get in instead.

Visit our membership page or try our intro offer to get started.

Do you have boxing classes for beginners in Geelong?

Absolutely. Our boxing classes cater to all levels, from first-timers to competitive fighters. We run beginner-friendly sessions for adults, plus kids and teens boxing for younger athletes. No experience, no contact and no pressure required, just turn up, have a go and enjoy the workout.

Can I do Muay Thai just for fitness, or is it only for fighters?

Muay Thai is one of the best total-body workouts you can do. It works your legs, arms, back and core in one session. While we do train competitive fighters, most of our Muay Thai members train purely for fitness, stress relief and fun. Carbon Gym founder John Bourke lost 40kg doing Muay Thai before he ever stepped into the ring. There is no pressure to compete.

Do you offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in Geelong?

Yes. We run gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for all levels, coached by experienced black belt instructors. BJJ is a great martial art for self-defence, fitness and mental discipline. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced grappler, you are welcome on the mats at Carbon Gym.

Do you have kids martial arts classes?

We do. Our kids martial arts program is one of the most popular things we run. Kids classes start at age 5, and kids BJJ starts at age 8. There’s no hard upper limit. Around 16 most kids are better suited to the adult classes, but we take it case by case.

Classes run Monday to Thursday afternoons:

  • 4:00pm: Muay Thai, ages 5–7 (30 minutes)
  • 4:30pm: Muay Thai, ages 8–12 (45 minutes)
  • 4:30pm: BJJ, ages 8–12 (45 minutes)
  • 4:30pm: Teens Boxing (Monday and Wednesday) or Teens Muay Thai (Tuesday and Thursday), 45 minutes

Classes build confidence, discipline, coordination and fitness in a safe, supportive environment. Your child’s first class is free, so they can try it out with no commitment.

Is there a minimum term on kids memberships?

No. The Kids membership is $39.99 a week with no minimum term, and it covers all kids classes. There’s also a 10-week block for $350 paid up front. The 26-week minimum term applies to adult memberships only.

What recovery facilities do you have?

Our recovery suite has three ice baths, an infrared sauna, a hot rock sauna, a massage chair, and Dopamine Labs compression boots. Recovery access is included in our Gym & Recovery, Recovery+ and Full Access memberships. Proper recovery helps reduce muscle soreness, improve circulation and get you back to training faster.

Do you have showers and change rooms?

Both our studios are equipped with showers, change rooms and disabled bathroom facilities.

Can non-members use the sauna and ice baths?

Yes. Casual recovery day passes start from $25 a session, with no membership required. Book at carbongym.com.au/ice-bath-sauna-geelong. If it’s your first time in the Dopamine Lab, you’ll need to complete a 20 minute orientation first, which you book on the same page.

Do I need an orientation before using the Dopamine Lab?

Yes. Everyone needs to complete a Dopamine Lab Orientation before their first session. It takes 20 minutes and you book it on the recovery booking page, same as a session.

Is cold plunge use safe for everyone?

Short cold plunges are safe for most healthy people, but if you are pregnant or have a heart condition or other medical concern, check with your doctor first. Staff can help you ease into it.

Do you offer personal training?

Yes. Our personal training sessions are tailored to your individual goals, whether that is weight loss, strength building, sports-specific conditioning or general fitness. Our PT team works with you one-on-one to create a program that gets real results.

Do you offer body composition scans?

Yes, an InBody scan covers muscle mass, body fat percentage, visceral fat, water balance and BMR. Bookable online.

When is the gym staffed?

  • Monday: 6:00am – 8:00pm
  • Tuesday: 6:00am – 8:00pm
  • Wednesday: 6:00am – 8:00pm
  • Thursday: 6:00am – 8:00pm
  • Friday: 6:00am – 5:00pm
  • Saturday: 9:00am – 3:00pm
  • Sunday: unstaffed

Members have 24-hour access. Gym Only, Gym & Recovery, Recovery+ and Full Access memberships include 24/7 gym floor access with a FOB or through our app, so you can train whenever suits. Staffed hours are when a person is on the floor, not when the doors open. Classes Only and Kids memberships cover classes rather than gym floor access.

Message us any time. If we are not on the floor, the team will get back to you first thing.

Can I use the recovery facilities outside staffed hours?

The Dopamine Lab, the compression boots and the massage chair are only available during staffed hours, even if your membership includes 24/7 gym access. If you need a time outside those hours, talk to the team with plenty of notice and they may be able to arrange it.

Is the 24/7 access secure when there’s no staff on site?

Yes, after-hours access is CCTV monitored and the gym floor is well lit throughout. Entry is by FOB, so only current members can get in.

What happens in my first class?

You will be introduced to a trainer and, where possible, paired with someone of a similar level, or with someone more experienced who can help guide your session.

Do I need to book classes?

Book ahead if you are coming in for a free first class or an intro offer, so we know to expect you.

Members do not need to book, but we recommend it. It guarantees your spot.

What should I bring to my first class?

Water, a towel, and comfortable workout clothes.

If you have your own equipment, bring it. If not, we can lend you gear temporarily while you find your feet.

No shoes on the mats, boxing shoes are the only exception.

Can I pause or cancel my membership?

Adult direct debit memberships run on a 26-week minimum term. Email hello@carbongym.com.au for any membership change, including cancellation and suspension, and the team will talk you through your options.

Can I freeze my membership if I’m injured or travelling?

Yes, you can suspend your membership for up to 6 weeks per year. If you are injured or planning a longer trip, speak to staff and they will more than likely be able to accommodate you.

What is the class timetable?

We run over 50 classes a week, boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, MMA and Carbon Fit for adults, plus kids and teens martial arts Monday to Thursday afternoons.

See the full timetable for current times.

Do you run spin classes?

We have spin bikes on the gym floor that members can use any time, but we don’t run an instructor-led spin class at the moment.

Do you sell gym gear?

Our online shop sells boxing gloves, shin pads, apparel and MyZone heart-rate monitors.

What is MyZone?

MyZone is a heart-rate monitor, worn as a chest strap, wrist band or arm band, used in every class at Carbon Gym. It tracks your heart rate, calories, time and effort, and displays it live on the in-class screen so you can see your intensity in real time, while building an online log of your training. Every minute of activity earns you MYZONE Effort Points (MEPs), based on how hard you are working rather than just showing up, and you can take part in individual and friend challenges, monthly challenges with prizes, and MyZone Open, a leaderboard event open to all members. Monitors start from $150 and are available in three models (Switch, Switch 2.0 and Max) through our online shop. They can’t be borrowed or shared between members.

What’s your returns policy on gear bought from the shop?

Change-of-mind returns are accepted within 14 days if items are unworn and tagged. Items worn against the skin, like a MyZone heart-rate strap, can’t be returned for change of mind once used. Faulty items are covered under Australian Consumer Law.

How do I get started?
