Martial Arts Geelong: What Can You Train?
At Carbon Gym you can train six disciplines in one place: boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, mixed martial arts (MMA) and dedicated kids martial arts. Each has its own specialist coach and runs multiple classes a week, so you can go all-in on one art or cross-train across several. Here is a quick guide to each.
Boxing
Footwork, head movement and real punching power, with women’s and kids classes and a full ring. The best cardio you will ever do, and a genuine skill. Great for fitness, stress relief and confidence. Sessions cover pad work, bag work and technical sparring, building genuine hand speed and defence over time. Classes run most days of the week, with dedicated women’s and kids sessions alongside our mixed adult classes, so beginners never feel out of place next to a full-time fighter.
Muay Thai
The art of eight limbs: punches, kicks, elbows, knees and clinch work. Brilliant conditioning and one of the most effective stand-up arts for self-defence and MMA. Classes cover the full striking arsenal, plus the clinch work most gyms skip, taught by coaches who compete themselves. It is brutal on your fitness in the best way, and doubles as one of the best foundations for MMA if you decide to cross-train later.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)
The “gentle art” of leverage and ground control, where technique beats size. Gi and no-gi, kids and adults, led by a first-degree black belt. The best martial art for real self-defence on the ground, with a low injury rate. Classes run gi and no-gi across the week, with separate beginner, advanced and kids sessions so you are always training at the right pace. Because BJJ relies on leverage and timing rather than strength, it is one of the few martial arts where a smaller, technical person can consistently beat someone bigger and stronger.
MMA
The complete game: striking, wrestling and ground fighting in one system, on full mats and in a real cage. Train like a fighter, whether or not you ever compete. Here at Carbon our MMA program runs for every level, from a complete beginner walking in for the first time through to an advanced competitor prepping for their next fight. You get to spar and free roll once you have the right gear, and our coaches make sure no one leaves with a black eye or a headache.

Kids Martial Arts
Boxing, BJJ and striking for ages 5 and up, in a safe, fun, structured environment that builds confidence, discipline and coordination. No contact required to start. Classes mix boxing pads, BJJ fundamentals and simple striking drills into games kids actually look forward to, run by coaches experienced working with children. It is one of the fastest ways to build real confidence, discipline and coordination, without any pressure to compete.
Which martial art is right for you?
Not sure where to start? Here is the simple version. If you want striking, fitness and stress relief, start with boxing or Muay Thai. If you want self-defence that works when a fight hits the ground, start with BJJ. If you want the full fighter skill set, train MMA. If it is for your child, our kids martial arts program is the place. You can always cross-train later, plenty of our members do. Still not sure? Come try a free class first, no commitment required. Want more time to explore everything before deciding? Our 7-day trial is $29.99 and covers every discipline on this page. Need longer to settle in? The 28-day kickstarter is $299 and gives you a full month across all our classes.
Who you’ll learn from
Carbon’s coaches are competitors, not just instructors. Our BJJ program is led by Russell Marston, a first-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a black belt in Judo, with Tiffany Joyce, a Victorian gi and no-gi absolute champion, and kids specialist Shawn Murphy. Our MMA program is led by Jacob Prosser, a professional fighter and training partner of UFC featherweight Jack Jenkins. Add dedicated Muay Thai and boxing coaches and you have a full combat team under one roof, with members regularly medalling at tournaments across Victoria.
Martial arts for kids in Geelong
Our junior program is one of the fastest-growing parts of the gym. Kids learn boxing, BJJ and striking in age-appropriate classes that focus on technique, respect and fun, not contact. It is a brilliant way to build confidence and get them off the screens. See the kids martial arts page for ages and times.
