Tiffany Joyce
BJJ InstructorHow did you get involved in BJJ?
I got involved in BJJ after watching it for years and seeing my partner always practising. It was always interesting to watch, so I decided to try it and loved it.
What experience do you have?
I have over four years of consistent experience and have competed many times, including winning the VIC Championship in both gi and no gi, as well as in the absolute weight classes.
What do you love most about training kids?
I love watching the kids have fun while learning something new that gets them moving and improves their overall fitness.
What is your teaching philosophy when it comes to kids’ BJJ?
To teach kids to respect each other and their skills, while also learning how to protect themselves and have fun at the same time.
What’s your favourite part of seeing kids progress in BJJ?
My favourite part is seeing them gain confidence in the skills they learn as they start progressing.
How do you make BJJ fun and engaging for kids while maintaining discipline and structure?
I focus on ensuring that kids not only learn but also get a chance to blow off steam. Wrestling and grappling are natural to us, so doing it in a structured and disciplined environment makes it engaging and helps them stay focused.
What do you think are the biggest benefits of BJJ for children, both on and off the mats?
They learn self-defence and don’t need to be big or small to use it effectively in real-life situations. It also boosts their confidence and fitness.
What advice would you give to a young student just starting BJJ?
Keep showing up, as you will learn something new in every class. BJJ isn’t a race; it’s a journey, and everyone’s path is different 😊
