Russell Marston

Head BJJ Coach

How did you get into BJJ?

I found Debeen Jiu Jitsu online after moving from Melbourne’s western suburbs to the Surf Coast. I didn’t know anyone around here and wanted to try something new, so I gave Jiu Jitsu a go.

What is one lesson or piece of advice that has stuck with you throughout your time in BJJ that you would like to pass on?

Patience and persistence guarantee improvement.

Gi or No-Gi? Why?

Gi. It’s far more relevant to self-defence.

How would you describe your coaching style?

Relaxed, with a strong focus on fundamental principles and self-defence.

What was the hardest part when you first started?

Not knowing anyone and feeling nervous—like the first day at a new school.

How can I get the most out of training with you?

Ask questions.

What do you think is the most important thing for someone new starting BJJ to know?

Everyone starts as a white belt. Everyone struggles at the beginning.

Who is, or has been, your toughest training partner? (We all know Dale thinks it’s him)

Max Debeen. When I started, he was just a kid—now he can easily beat me.

What are some of your interests or hobbies outside of BJJ?

I enjoy fishing, hunting, and spending time with my daughter.

Tell us something interesting about you that we may not already know

I’ve met Bill Clinton, Drake, and Will Smith.
