The science behind Johnny’s burger binge!

Cheat Meal Geelong Members Ask About
The cheat meal everyone at the gym asks about is usually a burger, a pizza, or a dessert that breaks an otherwise clean week. The science behind why one cheat meal doesn’t ruin progress is both reassuring and useful. This is the story of Johnny’s burger binge, how his body handled it, and what it tells us about the cheat meal Geelong lifters and fighters can actually afford to enjoy.
In Johnny’s Words: Why I Still Eat Burgers
As some of you have probably noticed, I enjoy the finer foods of life: pizza, Mexican, ice cream, and of course, burgers. So how can I claim to be a fitness professional, still eat this stuff, and brag about it? Here’s the deal: you’ve been sold old 1950s science that says you need to eat ‘clean’ by having 12 small meals of chicken and broccoli a day. Will that method work? Absolutely. But it’s not because you’re eating magic food, it’s because your daily caloric intake ends up below the amount you need to maintain your current weight.
So what is a calorie? A calorie is the approximate amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. So when you hear people talking about ‘good’ calories and ‘bad’ calories, they don’t really know what they’re talking about. A calorie is a unit of measurement, so talking about ‘good’ and ‘bad’ calories is as silly as saying ‘good’ kilometres and ‘bad’ kilometres. Units of measurement aren’t good or evil.
So what’s my point? If you eat less than your maintenance caloric intake, whether that’s over 1 meal or 10, you’ll lose weight. Calories matter, but so do the building blocks of those calories. Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins (plus fibre) – the macronutrients – play important roles in the body: repairing tissue, fuelling the brain, and protecting cells. Hitting those targets matters too. I’m not saying you have a green light to eat badly every meal, but portion control is what actually matters. If you want something high in calories, understand it will cost you somewhere: on the scales, round the waist, or in the gym.
Here’s where it gets tricky: although all calories are created equal, a calorie eaten isn’t quite a calorie eaten. Take a banana as an example, roughly 130 calories. Because of its fibre, a banana isn’t absorbed immediately, so your blood sugar rises gradually and your body has time to process it. Eat 130 calories of chocolate or soft drink instead, with no fibre, and your liver gets a rush of sugar it can’t process fast enough – so it stores it as fat instead. Pick your foods wisely, but don’t make yourself miserable over it. Just understand the science and the cost to your body.
In my opinion, the two most important things when it comes to diet are portion control and common sense.
I’m an extremely active person – according to my last metabolism test, my maintenance caloric intake is around 3500 calories. My diet isn’t suitable for everyone, so get proper advice tailored to you. I’ve kept this short, though I could have written pages on the subject – if you want more, get googling or feel free to ask me.
The Science of Gym Nutrition Geelong Lifters Need to Know About Cheat Meals
One meal cannot make you fat in the same way one salad cannot make you lean. A single cheat meal adds a small calorie surplus, some extra sodium, and usually a spike in carbs. None of it matters in the long run if the weekly average stays in line with your goal. According to Healthdirect Australia, consistency across the week is what drives body composition, not single-day choices.

FAQ
Will one cheat meal undo my week?
No. The small surplus is trivial compared to a week of consistent eating. It will not shift fat or erase progress.
How often can I have a cheat meal?
Once a week is a common starting point. Some people prefer small daily treats instead. Both work if weekly totals stay in line with goals.
Should I train harder after a cheat meal?
No special session is needed. Just return to your normal training. The extra calories may even fuel a slightly better next session.
