Sagadphet: The Muay Thai World Champion Who Trained at Carbon Gym Geelong

TL;DR: Sagadphet is a two-time Lumpinee Stadium champion and former Rajadamnern Stadium champion, one of the most respected names in Muay Thai. He spent six months as a guest coach at Carbon Gym Geelong through our partnership with Revolution Gym, and members travelled from across Australia to train with him. He’s now head trainer at Revolution Phuket. Here’s his story, and what his coaching style was really like.
Not many gyms outside Thailand get to say a Lumpinee Stadium champion coached their members. Carbon Gym Geelong can.
For six months, Sagadphet, one of the hardest-kicking fighters of his generation, ran classes and private sessions out of our Norlane gym. He came to us through our partnership with Revolution Gym in Phuket, and word travelled fast. People drove and flew in from all over Australia just to get on the mats with him.
Who Is Sagadphet?
Sagadphet (born Somkid Rakchun) is a retired Thai Muay Thai fighter and a former Rajadamnern Stadium champion and two-weight Lumpinee Stadium champion. He started training at seven years old in Thailand’s Phatthalung province and had his first fight at eight. By his late teens he was fighting in Bangkok, and he spent his career competing at the two biggest stadiums in the sport.
After retiring from competition, he moved into coaching full time. He’s now head trainer at Revolution Phuket Gym, where he trains everyone from beginners to title contenders.
What Titles Has Sagadphet Won?
Sagadphet holds Muay Thai’s two biggest domestic titles, at two different weights. He’s a Rajadamnern Stadium Super Featherweight champion (2002), a title he defended twice, and a Lumpinee Stadium champion at both Super Featherweight (2005) and Lightweight (2006), making him a two-weight Lumpinee champion. In 2006 he also won Lumpinee’s Best Wai Kru award, recognising his ring ceremony as the finest of the year.
Over his career he beat some of the biggest names to ever fight at Lumpinee and Rajadamnern, including Yodsanklai Fairtex and Singdam Kiatmuu9, and he fought internationally in Japan and South Korea, including a run at K-1 World MAX. That’s the level of fighter who spent six months teaching classes in Norlane.
Sagadphet’s Six Months at Carbon Gym Geelong
Revolution Gym in Phuket has been a training partner of ours for years, and when the chance came up to bring their head trainer to Geelong for an extended stint, we jumped on it.
Sagadphet was with us for six months. In that time he ran group classes open to members at every level, from complete beginners to our fight team, plus private sessions that regularly booked out within hours of going up. It wasn’t just a local drawcard either. People travelled from all over Australia specifically to train with him, some driving hours and others flying in, because the chance to learn from a two-time Lumpinee champion in person doesn’t come around often.
For six months, a gym in Norlane had one of Thailand’s most credentialled coaches on the mats several days a week. It’s one of the proudest stretches in Carbon Gym’s history.
What Made Sagadphet’s Coaching Style Different?
Sagadphet coaches by reading each student first, then adjusting to them. He watches how someone moves, works out their natural strengths, and builds the session around that instead of running everyone through the same drills.
What stood out most was how he ran sparring and pad work. Rather than static drilling, he’d flow through combinations and shift strategy in real time, essentially recreating live fight scenarios so students learned to think and react, not just repeat technique. For members used to standard pad rounds, training with someone who fought at that level changed how they understood the sport.
Is Carbon Gym Still a Good Place to Train Muay Thai in Geelong?
Yes. Sagadphet’s visit was a highlight, but Carbon Gym’s Muay Thai program runs year-round with experienced local coaches, structured classes for every level, and the same standard of coaching he helped set. Check the timetable for current class times.
