Why Muay Thai? | Geelong Muay Thai

Muay Thai: What is it?

What is Muay Thai, exactly?

We often get asked what Muay Thai is all about, and whilst some people come in to the gym with a bit of experience, it’s often people enter the gym not knowing a thing about it! Originating from Thailand more than 1000 years ago, Muay Thai is now one of the most popular martial arts around the world, and increasing becoming so in Geelong. And while it won’t take you long to realise that it’s a physically intense sport, Muay Thai isn’t just for up and coming fighters and martial arts enthusiasts! We offer Muay Thai classes in Geelong for anybody wanting to do something different, tone their body or learn a new skill… After all, it’s a class – no one expects you to arrive an expert!

Muay Thai for Beginners

Our classes aren’t just for physically fit people, interestingly ETC owner John Bourke founded the gym (Main Event Fitness) after losing an incredible 40kgs from Muay Thai training. So yeah… We get it! We know the struggles that many people face to find a form of exercise they enjoy – that works, so we ensure that our classes suit everyone! In fact, Muay Thai is great for people who are just wanting to get fit, because it boosts your body’s metabolism – burning off unwanted fats and assisting you in gaining muscle. Being popular amongst those wanting to learn some self-defense techniques and gain strength of mind, Muay Thai is an increasing prevalent sport for those people who find general gym routines and workouts somewhat boring. This is something we hear often from parents of kids that find popular sports such as footy or basketball uninteresting, we have plenty of kids come along to our fitness classes because they’re fast paced and fun – but most importantly, there’s something different to do all the time!

But it’s not just about throwing a punch…

Kicking and footwork plays a massive part in Muay Thai. One exercise that is distinctive to Muay Thai is the roundhouse kick – learning how to kick strengthens the lower body muscles. But it’s not just muscle endurance that makes Muay Thai so popular, unlike regular boxing – which predominantly works your arms and upper body – Muay Thai works the whole body, with punching, kicks and the use of your elbows and knees all being incorporated into the workout.

We’re really keen to spread the word about Muay Thai, there are so many misconceptions about it being merely about fighting – and whilst we have some fantastic competitive fighters who we sponsor and train here at ETC, the focus for us is just as much about the health and fitness of all of our clients. Just as much as Muay Thai teaches self-defense, it also teaches discipline and often provides relief from stress and improves mental health.
