Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Geelong
At the Carbon Gym, we offer multiple Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes for people looking to shake up their normal workout.
BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. BJJ is popular amongst people who want to lose weight, gain confidence, try something new or simply get bored from general gym workouts. A full body workout that will really get the blood pumping, BJJ doesn’t involve punching or kicks – instead there is a strong focus on grappling, using locks and chokes to subdue your opponent.
BJJ Gi
What is Gi BJJ? Our Gi BJJ classes teach the traditional techniques of Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu – grips, guard work, escapes and submissions – with a focus on respect and discipline. Suits beginners to advanced; try a class free.
Traditional yet evolving. In our classes, you’ll wear the Gi and learn how to control an opponent using lapel grips, sleeves and pant legs. From learning hip escapes and bridging to executing triangles, arm‑bars and sweeps, each session builds a foundation for effective self‑defence and sport grappling.
Supportive progression. Students are grouped by experience, so you’ll never feel out of your depth. Our black‑belt coaches guide you through technical drills, situational sparring and live rolling to ensure steady, injury‑free progress. Grading opportunities are available, but the emphasis is on personal growth, camaraderie and having fun.
BJJ No Gi
What is no‑gi BJJ? It’s Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu practised without the traditional Gi. You’ll learn how to use leverage, body positioning and efficient grips to control your opponent and finish fights. Our program is structured for beginners through to advanced grapplers, taking you from fundamental escapes and sweeps to dynamic submissions and competition‑level techniques.
Submission Grappling
What is Submission Grappling? Our submission‑grappling class combines wrestling, catch‑wrestling and no‑gi Jiu‑Jitsu to teach takedowns, positional control and submissions, ideal for MMA or pure grappling athletes.
Submission Grappling focuses on dominating positions and finishing holds without relying on clothing grips. Sessions start with wrestling‑based takedowns and clinch work, then progress to ground control, transitions and submissions such as chokes, armbars, kimuras and leg‑locks.
You’ll train situational drills to improve balance, pressure and escapes, followed by controlled live rolling. Coaches emphasise technique over strength and will adjust drills for beginners and advanced grapplers alike.
Why train with us? At Carbon Gym we pride ourselves on creating a safe, welcoming space where everyone can thrive. Classes are kept small to ensure personalised instruction, and you’ll train under experienced coaches who compete and constantly refine their craft. Whether your goal is to boost fitness, gain confidence, improve your MMA game or compete in grappling tournaments, our no‑gi sessions will challenge and inspire you.
The Carbon Gym runs regular BJJ classes in Geelong, including both kids and adults BJJ sessions. See our timetable for classes or contact us for enquiries.
