The Time a World Champion Came to Train in Geelong

TL;DR: In 2015, Carbon Gym brought one of the most decorated combat sports athletes on the planet to Geelong for a Muay Thai seminar. Around 70 people trained with Alistair Overeem on the night. Here’s what happened and why it still matters for the Carbon Gym community.

There are nights you talk about for years. The Alistair Overeem seminar at Carbon Gym in 2015 was one of them.

Overeem didn’t come to Geelong as a curiosity. He came as one of the most accomplished strikers in combat sports history: K-1 World Grand Prix Champion, Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, DREAM Interim Heavyweight Champion, and one of only two fighters to ever hold world championship titles in both MMA and K-1 simultaneously. By any measure, he was the real deal.

And for one night, he was at Carbon Gym in North Geelong.

What Happened on the Night

The seminar ran for close to two and a half hours. Spots sold out completely — around 70 people packed into the gym, ranging from seasoned fighters to complete beginners who just wanted to be in the room.

Overeem ran through techniques in detail — the kind of detail you only get from someone who has spent a career refining every movement at the highest level. Footwork, timing, striking combinations, the mechanics behind his legendary kicks. He walked people through it all.

Then he sparred. With anyone brave enough to step up.

That’s the part people still talk about. A fighter with Overeem’s record and profile didn’t have to do that. He chose to. That willingness to get on the floor with everyday people — not just showcase, but actually train — said everything about what the night was.

Who Is Alistair Overeem?

For anyone unfamiliar, Alistair Overeem’s record speaks for itself. He held the following titles during his career:

  • K-1 World Grand Prix Champion (2010)
  • K-1 World Grand Prix Third Place (2009)
  • Strikeforce Heavyweight Championship
  • DREAM Interim Heavyweight Championship
  • 2010 and 2011 International Fighter of the Year
  • ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship
  • Only fighter to consecutively hold three championship belts
  • One of only two fighters to win a world championship in both MMA and K-1

His striking in particular set the standard for heavyweight Muay Thai in MMA. The knee strikes, the timing, the pressure — all of it was on display at Carbon Gym that night.

Why Carbon Gym Does This

Bringing world-class fighters and coaches to Geelong has always been part of what Carbon Gym is about. Not everyone can fly to Thailand to train with the best. But if we can bring that level of experience to North Geelong, everyone in the community benefits — whether you’re training to compete or just showing up twice a week to stay fit and learn something new.

The Overeem seminar was one of the best examples of that. Seventy people from Geelong got two and a half hours with a world champion. That doesn’t happen at most gyms.
