Kids First Martial Arts Class Frequently Asked Questions

What should my child bring to their first martial arts class?

Just a water bottle and comfortable workout clothes. Carbon Gym provides mats, gloves, and any equipment needed for the first trial class. For BJJ, kids eventually need a gi but can wear a t-shirt and shorts for the first few classes.

How long is a kids martial arts class?

Kids classes at Carbon Gym Geelong run for 45 minutes. This keeps attention engaged, builds fitness without exhaustion, and lets kids leave on a high. Teen classes (13-17) run for 60 minutes with more technical content.

Will my child be put into sparring right away?

No. Beginner kids classes at Carbon Gym have zero sparring. Coaches focus on fundamentals, games, and fitness for the first term. Sparring is introduced only in advanced kids classes and requires parent and coach approval.

What if my child is shy or has never done sport before?

Our beginner classes are full of kids trying martial arts for the first time. Coaches are trained to welcome shy kids and build confidence gradually. Most shy kids are fully engaged within 3-4 classes. Parents can watch from the viewing area.

How do I know which martial art is right for my child?

Boxing builds coordination and cardio fast. Muay Thai adds kicks and clinch for fuller-body skill. BJJ is ground-based, great for kids who like problem-solving. Most Carbon Gym kids try multiple classes before settling on a favourite – our kids membership covers all of them.
