Carbon Gym Brought 11X Muay Thai Champion Nathan Corbett to Geelong
In 2022, Carbon Gym ran a Muay Thai seminar Geelong fighters still talk about, bringing 11-time world champion Nathan “Carnage” Corbett in for an afternoon most locals only get once in a lifetime.
Corbett fights under the name “Carnage,” and it fits. Across a career that spanned three continents, he became one of the most dangerous strikers Muay Thai has produced, known above all for elbows sharp enough to earn him the nickname “the man with the golden elbows.”
He ran the light-heavyweight and cruiserweight divisions for years before moving up to heavyweight in 2010, where he kept winning. Ten years, eleven world title belts:
- 2013 W.K.N. Muay Thai Heavyweight World Champion
- 2013 W.K.N. Muay Thai Heavyweight World Champion
- 2012 W.K.N. Muay Thai Heavyweight World Champion
- 2010 W.K.N. Muay Thai Heavyweight World Champion
- 2010 A-1 World Combat Cup Heavyweight Tournament Champion
- 2009 W.I.P.U. King of the Ring Champion
- 2007 K-1 Fighting Network Scandinavian Qualification Champion
- 2005 W.B.C. Muay Thai Light Heavyweight World Champion
- 2005-06 W.M.C. Muay Thai Cruiserweight World Champion
- 2005 I.M.F. World Champion
- 2003 W.M.C. Muay Thai Light Heavyweight World Champion
He’s also a White Ribbon Day ambassador, runs anti-bullying campaigns, and has trained alongside the Gold Coast Titans and spoken to the Gold Coast Blaze basketball team. In January 2020 he was one of fifteen fighters in the inaugural class of the WBC Muay Thai Hall of Fame. By 2019 he was calling professional fights for Lion Fight Promotions on CBS, one of the biggest Muay Thai promotions in the US, and he’s stayed close to the sport as a commentator ever since.
Inside the Muay Thai seminar Geelong trained alongside a world champion
Carbon Gym brought Corbett to 1/560 Latrobe Blvd, Newtown, for a hands-on session most gyms outside the major cities never get a shot at. World champions don’t usually run seminars in regional centres, so the fighters who trained with him that day got a few hours most competitors never do: direct coaching from someone who’s actually held the belts, not just talked about them.
Sessions like this tend to run the same way regardless of who’s teaching: pad work broken down technique by technique, corrections on stance and guard that a video tutorial can’t give you, and enough one-on-one time that everyone in the room walks out having fixed at least one habit they didn’t know they had. With Corbett, the elbow work was always going to be the highlight of the Muay Thai seminar Geelong got to watch up close, and by all accounts it was.
That’s the kind of access Carbon Gym keeps working to bring to Geelong. Muay Thai training here isn’t limited to the regular class timetable. Members get seminars, guest coaches, and the occasional world champion walking through the door, on top of the day-to-day coaching that builds fighters in the first place. It’s part of why Carbon Gym’s Muay Thai program has built such a strong following in the years since.
You don’t need to have been in the room for the 2022 seminar to get something out of Corbett’s career. His run from regional Australian gyms to CBS commentary booths is proof that the path from a local Muay Thai class to the top of the sport is a real one, not a marketing line. Carbon Gym’s coaches see the same drive in members who walk in for their first session, nervous and completely unsure of the footwork, and stick with it for years anyway.
